On January 29, 2019 a pilot group of EUVOLIA students gathered for the first time in ZNU European Studies Hall to meet the teachers and get to know each other. Thanks to enthusiastic work of all the team members of EUROPEOC project implemented at ZNU, - Oleksandr Gura, Yuriy Kaganov, Olena Tupakhina, Volodymyr Sarabeev, Natalia Voronova and project coordinator Victoria Meniaylo, - the project activities have become an important part of ZNU life, attracting more and more academic staff members and students willing to develop not only project competencies relevant to researcher profile but also such nuclear competencies as creative thinking, communication skills, teamwork, problem solving etc.
The further steps to be taken comprise the Grand Finale of University Project Contest climaxing in awarding grants from ZNU Rector, Mykola Frolov, for the best project in Faculty Image Development; the start of Jean Monnet EUROPROC Module teaching to Masters of the Faculty of Mathematics (full-day) and to the representatives of other HEIs (distance education mode).

The second day of the project activities simulation within Erasmus+ Jean Monnet EUROPROC module at ZNU had begun with the traditional SMART PT to boost our students’ creative thinking and get them ready for solving yet another set of challenging tasks, the first one of which was to construct a PhD student model from at-hand stuff: shells, plastic, nuts, conelets etc. After that, the participants together with their trainers Oleksandr and Tetyana Gura had revised the basics of project concept and its details: aims, goals, methods, activities, resources and results. The second half of the day was devoted to the development of three group projects: “PhD professional training”, “PhD competencies model”, “PhD career building”. Altogether, the projects served as elements of a complex project “Effective system of PhD professional training at the stage of integration to EU education and research area” presented by participants to ZNU top management. The experts represented by the Vice-Rector in Science and Research Gennadiy Vasylchuk and the Vice-Rector in Scientific and Pedagogical Affairs Yuriy Kaganov had praised the quality of the project and thanked the participants for their activities during two-day marathon organized by ZNU Vice-Rector in Academic Affairs Oleksandr Gura, Zaporizhzhya Regional Institute of Teachers’ Professional Development (ZRITPD) Vice-Rector in Scientific and International Issues Tetyana Hura, ZRIPTD Head of the Chair of Education Management and Pshychology Tetyana Afanasieva, ZRIPTD Inclusive Education Resource Centre methodologist and ZNU PhD student Ivan Kopytin, EUROPROC academic coordinator Victoria Meniaylo and EUROPROC team member Natalia Voronova. ZNU Vice-Rectors Gennadiy Vasilchuk, Oleksandr Gura and Yurii Kaganov highlighted that ZNU has always been a driving force of Ukrainian HE system improvements ready to support any creative initiative coming from the youth and to invest into implementation of these ideas to get closer to European standards of quality of education.

The trainers had prepared very interesting tasks for the participants, including SMART PT, constructing LEGO model of a PhD, a PhD training project design in terms of developing PhD professional competencies and career in science and research. The results of the projects had to be presented not only in a way of traditional ppt presentations, but also on video, collages, by means of dynamic structures; the applicants had to answer the questions from the experts represented by EUROPROC academic coordinator Victoria Meniaylo and team members Natalia Voronova and Volodymyr Sarabeev. Tomorrow, the second part of the training aimed at a group project in enhancing PhD training at ZNU, would be delivered to our participants. The results of the project would be later presented to ZNU top management.

The second part of EUROPROC module 3 is over! Following the course program, students mastered the Erasmus+ KA2 CBHE competitive ideas generation algorithms, leaned how to present their ideas on partner search platforms, studied the basics of project lifecycle planning based on QA mechanisms etc.
Special attention was paid to risks management, to sustainability and dissemination issues, to Erasmus+ KA2 CBHE impact factors and many other matters vitally important for successful project development.
As a final part of the module, the course attendants were asked to present the ideas of the group projects to be assessed by their peers regarding the projects’ relevance and the principles of SMART planning. The results proved that our PhD students have a clear vision of basic challenges faced by our education system on its way to European integration. The projects presented covered not only innovative course development (in microcontroller programming, regional studies), but also structural changes in HE: introducing practice-oriented teaching/learning models in the field of Economics, reforming FL teaching methods, implementing IT to the sphere of HEI management. Among the issued dealt by secondary school, the problem of young secondary school teachers’ burning out was raised together with early career planning initiatives. The general social issues, such as harassment prevention on campus, were also addressed.
Despite of lack of time, the students presented very balanced and competitive concepts some of which could be transformed into HE reforming projects in the nearest future.
Is academic mobility a must for any researcher? Isn’t it just a suitable disguise for what we call “academic tourism” or even “brain drain”? Such provocative questions introduced EUROPROC students to the first part of the third module of the course “Basics of European Project Activities”, aimed to train them to take part into European academic mobility programs under Erasmus+ KA107, Hirizon2020 Marie Curie, DAAD etc.
Of course, the trainings would pay the necessary attention to technical aspects of the process: CV and motivation letter writing, course catalogues surfing, training program draft design etc. But motivation is a point to start with. So, why should you enroll? To see new countries and new cultures? To get your precious associate professor certificate? To broaden your horizons and get an impulse to a “self-development” in a broadest way possible? Or just to “exchange experience”, as the prospective applicants tend to write tiresomely every now and then?

ZNU PhD STUDENTS GOT INTRODUCED TO EU RESEARCH AREA

On December 20 and 21, within the frames of Jean Monnet EUROPROC module, associate professor Volodymyr Sarabeev presented an outline of EU research project initiatives to the first-year PhD students. He also conducted a practical training in writing recommendation letter.
The audience considered the letter’s structure consisting of 4 passages. The first letter describes the background and terms of professional relationship between the applicant and a person who issues a recommendation. In case they are colleagues from the same institution, the applicant’s period of service, circle of responsibilities, project experience, effectiveness and results should be described.
The second passage is a detailed description of applicant’s professional competencies and skills: his/her abilities to accomplish certain tasks, teambuilding and teamworking skills, positive and negative features.
The third passage pays attention to the applicant’s personal features and behavior traits: the impression the person casts when communicating and interacting with the other group members, his/her being responsible, loyal, friendly etc.
The final passage contains any concerns the author might have regarding the applicant’s being appointed to a position he/she is applying for, as well as the author’s credentials and contacts.
In order to practice recommendation writing skills, the PhD students were asked to write a recommendation for one of their colleagues previously interviewed to find out all the necessary details. This fascinating process is captured on the picture.
